Personal Injury and Accident Tips

Being involved in a car accident can be a traumatic event. There are, however, a few simple guidelines that anyone can follow to help lessen the stress at the scene.

The first is to remain at the scene. Many people panic and feel that they are fine and ready to move on when in fact there may be damage to their vehicle as well as injuries to their body. Immediately following an accident, most people are in shock. When you are in shock, you cannot determine whether you are injured. It is always best to wait for the police or an ambulance to arrive. In addition to the physical health issues, it is against the law to leave the scene of an accident, and doing so often involves criminal charges being filed against you.

The second thing to remember after an accident is, no matter how much you want to help, unless you are trained in medical procedures like first aid or someone is in grave danger, do not move or attempt to treat anyone who is injured. Wait for the authorities to come, and if possible when contacting them, provide as much information about how many people are injured and the severity of the injuries to the person on the other end of the line.

The next items to remember involve obtaining as much information about the other driver or drivers as possible, and if you feel that you were at fault, do not admit it. At the very least you should obtain the name, address, registration number, and driver's license number of the other driver, and the names and addresses of any witnesses to the accident. Take any notes about the accident that you can remember, and jot down the location, time of day, weather conditions and other important facts that you may forget later on. Other than providing your information to the police officer, and getting a business card with their name on it, do not offer your opinion about the accident or the causes to anyone at the scene.

And finally, whether you believe you have visible injuries or not, seek medical attention to be sure that you are not injured. Once you have been released, you may also want to contact a personal injury attorney to discuss the details of your accident and any injuries you sustained for further advice and information.
